5+ DIY Home Decor Ideas To Decorate Switch Plates

We invest a lot in paint, decals and art to pretty up the walls of our homes, but so often forget about the switch plates. Given their usage, it’s only natural that they are the first element to get grubby and impossible to clean with time. Here we offer you some cladding home décor ideas that will flip the switch plate.

While we recommend working with wallpaper – a durable easy-to-maintain option – you could also try this project with scrapbook paper, fabric, customised printables, old maps, etc. It might be wise to use a sealer to protect the surface from wear and tear.

    Kit up

    • Light switch plates

    • Nilaya adhesive

    • A utility knife (cutter)

    • Wallpaper (size according to number of switch plates)

    • Paint (colour depending on that of the wallpaper)

    • Sponge

    • Paintbrush

    Step 1

In case of patterned wallpaper, decide on which part you want to highlight. Then placing the switch plate over the area, trace its outline.

    Step 2

Use the utility knife to cut out the pieces. Don’t cut out the switch slots in the middle just yet. Remember to place it on a cutting mat or cardboard surface to avoid scratching your worktable.

    Step 3

Apply a layer of Nilaya adhesive onto the plate and stick the wallpaper onto it. Smooth out any air bubbles with using the sponge.

    Step 4

Once dry, use the knife to slit through the centre from the underside of the switch plate. Slice out the centre, cutting carefully around the area. Try not to cut too close to the edge. If you do though, don’t worry. That’s what the next step is for.

    Step 5

Dab the brush with a bit of paint and go around all edges; inside and out, front and back. This will ensure a neat finish. While you’re at it, give the screws a lick of paint to maintain uniformity. Ensure not to douse them in paint or you will have trouble screwing them in.
