Design is being redesigned. And this is a truism. A field so intimately connected with human behavior which is ever changing and evolving is bound to change as well. As we become more sophisticated and complex as a species, and as we become more and more connected with each other, our expressions – design being one of them will reflect these changes.
This is a world constantly trying to better itself even though depressing political realities and all sorts of political and environmental ills do not attest to that. More than ever in the history of mankind, we are talking to each other – constantly. Every issue is discussed till it reaches a crescendo. Where does the designer fit into all of this? Well, designers are engaging more and more with social, environmental and political subjects. Many of them see themselves as students of human behavior or anthropologists. The work they do is skewed in that direction. There are studios like Participle and Engine Service Design that are social service driven and focus on service design.
Designers are expanding their horizons, applying their skills to almost anything. It is the age of the multidisciplinary firm. As one young designer put it: “you need to be skilled in quite a few areas.” So many agencies combine art, furniture, interior, illustration, branding and programming.
These are exciting times. Social media and easy accessibility have allowed collaboration at almost mass level. People are sharing space, interacting, sharing ideas and even working with people outside the design world. There are international behemoths producing large scale design solutions to small shops to freelancers producing quirky, individual creative expressions. It’s a great time to be in design.
